Art Furniss
(Samuel Byrd)

Art was raised on a farm in Ontario and actually attended a one-room school house.  These childhood experiences gave him memories that helped him create the depth of his character’s connection to the land and his frustration and depression at the prospect of losing it.  The employee of friends of the Bowes’,  Art came to audition after being encouraged by co-producer Joshua Layton-Wood.  He was quite shy and self-conscious in person, but on camera he was the obvious choice for weary Samuel.  He even looked like he could be the father of David (Jon) and  Lauren (Megan).  Art brought his own clothes and hats.  He walked around the set with his cane during his off times, to make his bad leg more of a reality.  He started acting in the Canadian Arctic working for CBC Radio.  He later studied acting in Toronto at T.V.S. Television Studios.  He has appeared in numerous community theater productions including: Annie Get Your Gun, Amadeus, On Golden Pond,, Olive, That Pioneer Spirit and A Grandchild for Everyone.  Always helpful, Art brought in many set decorations like the deer antlers and several props, including the gun that ‘shot’ the squirrel.  Art plans to continue acting wherever he can.
